Donald Altman, M.A., LPC, is a psychotherapist, international mindfulness expert and award-winning author with over 15 books in the psychology and mindfulness field who has taught mindfulness to thousands of healthcare professionals. Past Vice-President of The Center for Mindful Eating and featured in The Mindfulness Movie, he is profiled in the Living Spiritual Teachers Project. He has taught at Portland State University and Lewis and Clark College Graduate School of Education and Counseling, and spent several years as a senior mental health therapist at the Providence St. Vincent Eating Disorder and General Psychiatric Clinics, as well as at his own clinic. Donald has contributed articles to the Psychotherapy Networker, and has written chapters for The Wiley-Blackwell Handbook of Group Therapy and A Thousand Hands: A Guidebook to Caring for Your Buddhist Community.

Workshop Outline:

  • Discussion of Technology and the brain; Demonstrate and intro to 3-part breathing
  • Mindfulness Research and Resources
  • Discussion of epigenetics and stress, and the effect on brain and body functions
  • Demonstration of 5 effective diaphragmatic breathing postures for turning on a set of genes as identified from research of Herbert Benson
  • Research on effect of mind wandering, and demonstration of selective attention practices for anxiety and depression
  • Discuss how metacognition and selective attention can counter the brain’s negativity bias and improve positive affect
  • Demonstrate various evidence-based savoring practices for overcoming depression and anxiety
  • Demonstrate MBSR Body Scan technique for reducing perception of chronic pain
  • Identify and describe 5 self-care strategies necessary for mental clarity and emotional regulation
  • Discuss present moment focus on safe anchors and demonstrate how to help clients find safe anchors
  • Explain and discuss gratitude for depression and resilience, and how to apply a 4-part practice forgetting present and building relationships
  • Explanation of attention restoration theory and research, and how to use it with clients to restore depleted mental energy

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe and identify mind wandering and the effects of it on the telomeres and epi-genome.
  2. Discuss research on how mindfulness alters brain structure, breathing, and other body systems.
  3. Explain the effects of the stress response and how cortisol affects the immune system and learning.
  4. Demonstrate 5 effective breathing postures that turn on the parasympathetic nervous system for emotional regulation and turn on the body’s relaxation response.
  5. Describe and demonstrate a physical grounding method for getting clients present, and for turning attention away from rumination and anxiety.
  6. Identify and compare two evidence-based methods of selective attention that have been shown to improve mood.
  7. Discuss the research and demonstrate a key component of mindfulness-based stress reduction which has been shown to be helpful for chronic pain.

Continuing Education credit for this program is awarded by Commonwealth Educational Seminars (CES) for the following professions, and the program is intermediate level.
